The journey of jeera: from digestive to daily refreshment

Why a spice from the kitchen shelf became the most recognisable cold drink flavour in South India.

Jeera — cumin — has been part of Indian cooking and Indian home remedies for as long as either has existed. Roasted and ground, it is stirred into buttermilk, sprinkled over chaat, and boiled into water after heavy meals. It was familiar long before it was ever bottled.

In 2002, House of Bindu launched Bindu Fizz Jeera Masala: a carbonated drink built not on cola or orange, but on jeera and masala. It was a deliberately Indian proposition in a market dominated by imported flavour profiles, and it became the product the company is still best known for.

The reason it worked is the reason it still sells. A jeera masala drink is savoury, not sweet. It behaves the way Indians already expect a post-meal drink to behave. Nothing had to be explained.

Everything the House has built since — ginger masala, kokum jeera, salt soda — follows that same logic: start from a flavour people already trust, then package it well.
